Statement

When it comes to the reason for pursuing an architecture degree at MSA, I believe its academic strength, state-of-the-art facilities, and vibrant community are something that captivate me the most. As a leading architecture course jointly run by two prestigious institutions, Manchester Metropolitan University and The University of Manchester, this BA program is tailored to equip me with the technical acumen and creative mindset to tackle real-world challenges. As a student in this esteemed course, I will have access to the facilities and academic resources from both of these universities. Among various well-tailored modules, “Transforming Places” intrigues me the most, as it allows me to examine the potential for transformation from a global perspective. Furthermore, MSSA, the largest architecture student society, offers opportunities to interact with renowned designers, and social events to expand my professional network and prepare for a successful future career. Therefore, I believe that the educational resources of MSA will facilitate my professional development, aligning well with my academic aspirations.

21_21 Design Sight is a recent exhibition that left me with a profound impression. It showcased the broad applications of 3D-printed items, including printed bones for medical purposes, which had complex, flexible, and expandable structures using durable materials. These intricate models could not be fabricated using traditional moulding techniques. Thus, this exhibition offers a wide range of low-cost and effective 3D printed projects, further refreshing my perception of 3D printing techniques. Besides, in terms of this exhibition building, a masterpiece by Tadao Ando, I appreciate how the designer used a single cement slab as a roof while incorporating natural lighting through building openings to illuminate the underground level. This approach and material choice influenced various projects in my design portfolio and A-level Art and Design course.

One of my favourite architects is Louis Kahn. He captivated me with his Salk Institute, known for its “light,” “order,” and “form.” Specifically, I enjoy the way he used basic materials like masonry and concrete and experimented with natural lighting, thus creating superb spatial experiences. His design approach, especially his use of light, spatial order, and architectural form, influenced my creative process. Various design projects of mine reflected my speculations on these key architectural elements.

The building I would like to experience in person is Can Lis, a residential project by Jørn Utzon. Located on the Spanish coast, this work was inspired by Mediterranean architecture, incorporating concrete and masonry to harmonise with the seaside environment. Even some furniture was crafted from stone. It is an ideal residence in my mind, perfectly uniting light, stones, the sun, and the sea.
